Description
Very well executed pastel by Pennsylvania impressionist Melville Stark. Sight image of the piece is approximately 9 1/4 x 12 1/2 and it is double matted and framed to 14 1/2 x 17 1/2 inches. Snowy winter scene most likely of Bucks County or the Lehigh Valley. Stark ( 1903-1987 ) received training at the University of Pennsylvania, Syracuse University, and the Philadelphia Museum School. He studied under and became a lifelong friend of Walter Baum whose style influenced Stark’s work greatly. During the 1930s Stark taught at the Kline-Baum School of Art. He subsequently became the Director of Art at Muhlenburg College and was a founder of the Lehigh Art Alliance. Stark was a member of the New Hope school of artists and his plein -air style is distinctive. This piece has not been examined out of the frame but appears to be in excellent condition. The mat and frame compliment the piece well.
