Description

On offer, we have an original sketchbook from American artist Henry Dietrich (Dick) Gremke. This is a 6" X 9 1/2" book with 24 pages of sketches and 2 watercolor pages of flowers. The pencil sketches are landscapes, portraits, fragments and small scenes. This comes with a "Certificate Of Authenticity" from Jeanne Katz Wilson whose uncle was a student of Gremke and states the sketches are from 1884 forward. We also have the 2004 receipt from when this was purchased from Henry Clars Estate Auction Gallery, Oakland, CA. The price was $283.00. About the artist: Henry Dietrich (Dick) Gremke (1860-1939) "was a p ainter, muralist and photographer. Born in San Francisco, Dick Gremke was the son of German immigrants who had sailed to California in the early 1850s. His father was a gold miner and later a chandler for the clipper ships. The younger Gremke grew up in San Francisco and began art studies locally at the School of Design under Raymond Yelland. As well as being a fine painter, he was also an able photographer. After the earthquake in 1906, he did a series of paintings of the destruction. He specialized in watercolors and oils of the Sierra Nevada and highly detailed floral still lifes. He also painted murals for the stations of the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific railroads." (askART) I believe this is in good condition. The old cloth covered binding of the book is very worn and damaged. Some pages are loose, some have spots, toning and/or pencil smudges. Some sketches are faded. Many sketches are excellent and worthy of framing. The watercolors of flowers are bright, bold and clear. The COA is the copy provided by the auction house. As I am not an expert on art, please see my photographs for more description. This is from my friend who collects everything and is moving to a much smaller home. Now, he starting to part with a few of his treasures. I will be happy to answer any questions and, of course, combine your shipping.
