Description

A 19th century mix media drawing on paper, after Vincent Van Gogh. This piece depicts the portrait of a Man With Cloth Hat wrapped around his head. The piece appears to be done in pencil, with some of the pencil lines gone over in what appears to be ink, and having some areas of what appears to be a white gouache being used as highlights (please see photos). As stated, not all of the pencil lines have been gone over in ink, but some of the pencil lines, that are traced over in ink, show the effect of the pencil bleeding through the ink to give the finished line a slight shiny, glittering look (please see photos). The piece is approximately 4 13/16 inches (12.2cm) high by 5 1/16 inches (12.8cm) wide, and it is unframed. The paper is a slightly heavy stock, that is darker flat brown in color (please see photos). The drawing appears to have been framed with a mat at some point, as the front part that was exposed to light has extremely faded in color compared to the papers original color (please see photos). The piece appears to have been laid down at some point, as the back has heavy remnants of paste (please see photos). This appears to be a home made type of paste, consisting of a flour or corn starch base, with what appears to be very small specks of a straw type material throughout, which appear as slightly reddish brown small spots (please see photos). This item does have aspects to it that suggest it could very well be 130 to 140 years old. With the exception of condition aspects already mentioned, overall this piece appears to be in very good condition. There is some fading from light exposure in the pencil lines which were not covered by ink, but the ink lines appear to remain very strong as does also the white gouache areas (please see photos). Please see all photos as they are a major part of this items conditional description.
